A Journey through the Body
Objective:
Learners accompany a selected part of the body on its journey through the human body in order to understand the functions of the immune system and the interaction of different organs in a playful way.
Contents and methods:
The worksheet uses a narrative first-person perspective to convey complex biological processes in the areas of blood circulation, immune defense, and organ functions (including the heart, lungs, spleen, liver, and kidneys). The methodical implementation is achieved through a combination of reading texts, supplementary audio content via QR code, multiple-choice questions, a crossword puzzle, matching tasks, and a creative drawing task to visualize the journey through the body.
Skills:
- Expertise in the components and functions of the human immune system and organs
- Reading comprehension and decoding of factual texts
- Transferability through the assignment of functions to anatomical structures and the graphical representation of biological processes

A Journey through the Body

Introduction
In this worksheet, you will follow an important part of the body as it travels through the body and learn more about its function and tasks.
The Adventure of a Leucocyte - Part 1
Hello there! I'm a leucocyte, also known as a white blood cell, and I'm about to take you on an exciting journey through the human body. My mission is to keep the body safe from germs and infections. I start my adventure in the bone marrow, where I'm born and trained to be a fierce protector. Once I'm ready, I enter the bloodstream, where I get swept along by the flow of blood.
My first stop is the heart. Here, I'm pumped and pushed through arteries, traveling rapidly towards various parts of the body. As I zoom through the blood vessels, I'm always on the lookout for signs of trouble. My job is to patrol and ensure everything is in order. If I spot any invaders like bacteria or viruses, I spring into action.
Next, I pass through the lungs where I get a fresh supply of oxygen. This oxygen is essential for me to stay active and alert. The lungs are like a refreshing pit stop, and I make sure to absorb as much oxygen as I can before moving on.
As I venture further, I might travel to the skin, where I inspect for cuts or bruises. If there’s a breach in the skin, it's my duty to gather my leucocyte friends and form a barrier to fight off any unwanted intruders.
Sometimes, I find myself in the lymph nodes, where I meet other leucocytes. We share information about potential threats and prepare for battles against infections. The lymph nodes are like our secret communication hubs, allowing us to strategize and strengthen our defenses.
This is just the first half of my journey, filled with exciting tasks and challenges. But there’s more to come as I continue my quest to protect the body. Stay tuned for the next part of my adventure!

The Adventure of a Leucocyte - Part 2
After my visit to the lymph nodes, my journey continues through the body's intricate network. As I travel, I might head towards the liver, a vital organ that helps detoxify the blood. Here, I aid in filtering out harmful substances, ensuring the bloodstream remains clean and healthy. The liver is like a giant purifier, and I play a crucial role in supporting its function.
Sometimes, I venture into the spleen, an organ that acts like a recycling center. The spleen is responsible for breaking down old or damaged cells and recycling their components. I assist in this process, ensuring that the body efficiently manages its cellular waste. It's an important task that keeps everything running smoothly.
On other days, I might find myself in the intestines. This is where nutrients from digested food are absorbed into the bloodstream. I help in monitoring for any harmful bacteria that might have entered through food. It's essential to keep the intestines safe, as they are crucial for nourishment and energy.
Eventually, my journey may take me to the kidneys, which are responsible for filtering waste from the blood and maintaining fluid balance. Here, I help ensure that no infections disturb the delicate process of urine formation. The kidneys are like the body's natural filtration system, and I proudly contribute to their function.
As I continue my patrol, I remain vigilant, always ready to respond to any signs of trouble. Whether it's a hidden virus or a lurking bacterium, I'm prepared to engage in battle, calling upon my fellow leucocytes to join the fight.
Throughout my adventure, I'm driven by the mission to defend and protect the body. Each station in this journey presents unique challenges, but my determination never wavers. With every heartbeat, I remain committed to safeguarding the health and well-being of the body.
And so, my adventure as a leucocyte carries on, as I tirelessly work to keep the body safe and thriving.
