Ways to Seek Help and Support After Assault or Harassment
After an assault or harassment, it's important to remember: You are not alone and it is not your fault. Talk to someone you trust - this could be an educator, a parent, or a counseling center. There are also anonymous support services available that will listen, provide advice, and help you take the next steps.
👥Partner Activity: Do you already know of any places where you can report assault or abuse? If so, write them down. Consider what options are available and whom you can trust.

2. Why is it important to talk about such experiences and not keep them to yourself?

Support for Abuse Victims: RAINN's Mission and Services
RAINN, the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network, is the largest anti-sexual violence organization in the United States. It was founded in 1994 and has since been committed to providing critical support to victims of sexual abuse and violence. Their mission is to ensure that every person affected by these issues has access to the resources and support they need for recovery.
One of RAINN's primary services is the National Sexual Assault Hotline, which offers free and confidential support, 24/7. Individuals can reach out to trained staff via phone or through their online chat service. This hotline is designed to assist people in crisis by providing emotional support, guidance, and information about local resources. Whether someone is seeking immediate help or simply needs to talk, RAINN ensures that there is always someone available to provide compassionate care.
In addition to the hotline, RAINN offers extensive educational resources on their website. They aim to raise awareness about sexual violence and educate the public on prevention strategies. Their resources include information about recognizing signs of abuse, understanding consent, and supporting survivors. RAINN also advocates for improved laws and policies to protect victims and prevent sexual violence.
Gender-inclusive language is a cornerstone of RAINN's approach. They acknowledge that anyone can be affected by sexual violence, regardless of gender identity. Therefore, they use gender-neutral pronouns and terms to create a welcoming and inclusive space for all survivors.
RAINN collaborates with other organizations to expand its impact. They partner with colleges, military institutions, and local communities to provide training and support services. These collaborations help create a network of support that reaches diverse populations and ensures that everyone has access to necessary resources.
For young people, RAINN has developed educational programs focused on prevention and awareness. These programs are designed to empower teenagers by educating them about consent and healthy relationships. By engaging with students, RAINN hopes to foster a culture of respect and understanding.
RAINN’s dedication to supporting victims of sexual abuse is unwavering. Their services are designed to empower individuals, helping them regain control and begin their journey towards healing. Through their comprehensive support system, RAINN ensures that no victim has to face their experiences alone, providing a beacon of hope and assistance in times of need.
