Unboxing with a Literary Character or an Author

Unboxing with a Literary Character or an Author

Objective: This worksheet aims to guide students through the process of creating an "unboxing" video centered around a literary character or author, thereby developing their understanding of media production, content creation, and literary analysis.

Content and methods: The worksheet begins by introducing students to the concept of unboxing videos, instructing them to watch examples and take notes on typical procedures. Students then sort the typical sequence of an unboxing video, reinforcing their understanding of its structure. It presents an image of a "Magical Un-boxing" box and asks students to identify its contents and evaluate their suitability for a specific (though unspecified) person. The core task involves preparing and packing their own unboxing box based on a chosen literary character or author. This involves recalling knowledge about the chosen individual, considering a recipient, drafting a note from the character/author, and selecting appropriate items with justifications. Finally, students are guided on how to shoot their unboxing video, with tips on lighting, recording environment, background music, recording device, microphone, and editing app.

Competencies:

  • Media literacy and analysis (understanding video formats)
  • Sequencing and logical ordering
  • Literary analysis and character/author understanding
  • Creative thinking and content development
  • Planning and organization
  • Basic video production considerations

Getting to know unboxing videos

Watch at least one unboxing video on a platform such as YouTube.

Take notes about the procedure

Sort the (typical) sequence of an unboxing video.

Preparing and packing the box

Now you know how an unboxing video can be structured. Are you ready for your own unboxing?

First, the box needs to be filled.

Step 1: Choose a literary character or an author to fill this box about.

Step 2: What do you know about this person? What have you learned? Write down all your knowledge (initially) in an unsorted manner.

Step 3: Consider who the recipient should be (e.g., your class, your parents, or a completely different person?).

Step 4: What would the character or author write in a note included in the box? Consider the recipient.

Step 5: Choose the possible appropriate items to go in the box. Why do you choose these items?

Shoot your unboxing video

Now slip into the role of the recipient. Pay attention to the instructions for the process that you have already organized (see above). Here are a few more tips regarding the technique:

  • What kind of lighting would enhance the mood (bright, dark, spotlight)?
  • Where can the video be recorded without interruptions?
  • Is there background music? If so, be mindful of copyright.
  • What recording device will be used? And from what perspective?
  • Which microphone?
  • Which app can be used for editing?
