Choose eight useful terms
Our PDF contains one short explanation of a pond food chain. We chose ALGAE, SUNLIGHT, PRODUCER, CONSUMER, HERON, BACTERIA, ENERGY and NUTRIENTS: terms pupils need to discuss the reading, rather than every noun on the page. Ask for meaning-based clues and specify singular answers where needed.

Create a crossword in to teach
Open the source selector and choose Document/PDF. Select the reading file, save it and wait until its filename appears in the source panel. Our school-pond-source.pdf was then available for generating the crossword. Select Crossword, set the output language to English and ask for the eight chosen terms.
Improve the clue that gives the answer away
The first SUNLIGHT clue said “Light from the sun”. We replaced it with “The energy source algae need to make their own food”. The new clue asks pupils to connect the word with the reading, rather than spot the answer inside the question.
Our first AI revision also changed other vocabulary. For the next revision, we supplied the complete answer-and-clue list. Check every answer after editing: a different plural form or an unintended replacement can change the puzzle you planned.

Use it after reading, then explain the food chain
Give pupils the source reading first, then use the crossword to consolidate its vocabulary. After solving it, ask pairs to explain one arrow in the food chain: what eats what, and which way does energy move? The puzzle supplies the terms for that explanation.
Solve the grid yourself before sharing it. For paper use, inspect your print preview for clipped clues and page breaks before making class copies. Keep the source available so pupils can return to the passage when they need evidence for an answer.
Adapt the method to another reading
For a lesson on another biology topic, choose a short source your class can read and identify the terms they need for the next task. In a connected lesson plan, the reading introduces the content, the crossword consolidates vocabulary and the explanation checks the relationships.
