Turn a PDF reading into a classroom multiple-choice quiz

Turn a PDF reading into a short comprehension check with one clear purpose per question. Our school pond example checks four ideas: energy transfer, producers, nutrient uptake and food webs. The source and finished quiz below show how to move from an uploaded reading to questions you can discuss with your class.

Create a multiple-choice quiz in to teach

Open the source selector, choose Document/PDF, select the file and save it. Wait until the filename appears in the source panel. We used school-pond-source.pdf in the same material session as our crossword, then selected Multiple Choice and replaced the vocabulary instructions with comprehension goals.

Set the language to English and request four questions, each with one correct answer and three plausible alternatives. Specify the four ideas to assess so that the quiz does not ask the same question in different words.

Make the question precise enough to answer

One generated question asked which organisms can use nutrients released by decomposers. We changed it to “According to the passage, which organisms use nutrients released by decomposers?” The correct option is plants and algae. The opening phrase makes the task a reading-comprehension question rather than an invitation to consider every biological possibility.

A narrow AI revision also changed other questions. We then supplied the complete four-question set with explicit answer options. This kept the four concepts distinct and the choices concise. Compare the whole revised quiz with the source, including questions you did not intend to change.

Review the four answers before class

Question 1 checks arrow direction: energy moves from the water flea to the fish that eats it. Question 2 checks why algae are producers: they make food using sunlight. Question 3 asks for the plants and algae named in the passage. Question 4 checks why a food web connects several chains: organisms can have more than one food source.

Try each question in the interactive example and use Check to see the result. When adapting the quiz, keep wrong options plausible but clearly wrong according to your source; avoid making the correct option stand out simply because it is much longer.

Use wrong answers to choose the next explanation

Use the quiz after pupils have read the passage. Ask them to justify a choice with a sentence from the PDF before discussing the answer. A reversed arrow calls for work on energy transfer; confusion about producers calls for revisiting how algae obtain energy. These are different teaching decisions, even if both pupils score three out of four.

Keep the PDF beside the quiz during review. For a later lesson, use the same source in a lesson plan and add a vocabulary activity before the comprehension check. Choose each material for the phase it supports.
